The Coldness of the Room

from Skylines by Lisa Bella Donna

/

about

Written and recorded in April 1993 on a cold, darkend and rainy day. My dear friend Matthew Westbrook had just passed away. Only age 17. I penned many songs in his departure, With intentions to send him good frequency to see him through to the other side.

At the time I lived in a little tiny 4 room house in the obscurity of West Virginia. In that little house I had installed an amazing analog 8 channel recording studio. It was such an inspiring and formative time for me. A beautiful time of invisibility and personal discovery.
I was very young and still learning how to record properly. This recording is full of flaws. This is the original mix from the master 2-track tape.
However, One of the very main reasons I became obsessed with analog recording (especially during this era) was to strive to make my recordings sound and feel like that of a 16mm motion picture film. To go back in time to find scene locations that were left unresolved or never seen. To travel the musical backroads, overgrown countrysides, and desolate alleyways of the urban forgotten. The empty abandoned homes where life and times once created their own muse.

That's why this recording be only available for a limited amount of time.

26 years has gone by and every time I hear this song. I feel the presence of my dear and long lost friend. He was always so inspired and vocal in regards to my developing muse. He was wise and kind beyond his years. However, growing up in West Virginia then was rough. It took it's toll on many of us.
I chose to vanish as far as I could into the wilderness of writing and recording. Everyone was going digital and I was running as far as I possibly could into the sounds and ideas of the 7Os ...

This is a little piece of that chapter.
